IceGators Fall in Season Opener 3-2

LAFAYETTE, LA - The Louisiana IceGators dropped the season opener 3-2 against their rivals, the Mississippi Surge. The game was played in Biloxi on the Surge's home ice.

The IceGators opened the first period getting out shot 18-3 but IceGator goalie Scott Darling was able to stop all of the shots. However, with 4:49 left in the period Jason Cassells (MIS) took advantage of Beau McLaughlin (LOU) tripping penalty to take the lead 1-0. Dennis Sicard (LOU) answered right back with a goal of his own to even the game at one at the end of the first period.

Mississippi started the second period just like they started the first. This time the Surge had four of the first seven shots on goal in the period. About 6:30 minutes into the period Cassells (MIS) scored his second goal of the game. Sicard then responded with his second goal of the game evening the affair at 2-2.

The IceGators turned the table and opened the third period aggressively but the aggressive play backfired and when Chris Chambers (MIS) scored on a quick goal to give the Surge the lead 3-2. This time Sicard was unable to tie the game up and the ‘Gators lost a tough game on the road. Even though Darling allowed three goals he still had a save percentage of 93.4%.

The ‘Gators struggled to keep with penalties tonight. They had 23 minutes on 10 infractions and the Surge had 9 minutes on 3 infractions.

"It is tough to win a game with you are constantly short handed," answered ‘Gator Head Coach Dave MacIsaac when asked about the loss. "We played hard and did a lot of good things tonight but the penalties added up. We just have to improve and play smart, and stay out of the box."

The ‘Gators return to the ice tomorrow night against Pensacola Ice Flyers in Pensacola at 7:05. Louisiana will get another chance at the Surge next Friday when the ‘Gators return to Biloxi to battle against the Surge again.
