Alpena IceDiggers News Release

The IceDiggers final regular season home game -- originally scheduled for Thursday, March 24 versus the Youngstown Phantoms -- was changed to this past Monday, March 21 at Northern Lights Arena in Alpena, Michigan. Nearly 1,000 fans attended -- 975 to be exact -- as Youngstown defeated the IceDiggers by a score of 5-2.

That marked a new record for an Ice Diggers "home" game. The previous mark was set eight days earlier, March 13, when 852 fans turned out to see the IceDiggers drop a 4-1 decision to the Soo Indians in Alpena.

"The atmosphere was awesome and the people of Alpena were very supportive of the team," said IceDiggers GM/head coach Mike Mankowski after the first Alpena game. "Our kids were thrilled with the opportunity to play in a first-class facility and in front of a very hockey savvy crowd."

The IceDiggers are currently in negotiations with Northern Lights Arena management to move the team to Alpena, and have formally applied with the NAHL office for a transfer of the team to that Michigan town.

The team said they expect an announcement on the move to come within the next two weeks. The NAHL Board of Governors must approve the relocation of any member club.

The IceDiggers have played out of the Toledo Ice House since the start of the 2002-03 season.
