St. John's IceCaps News Release
The St. John's IceCaps Hockey Club is proud to announce a venture designed to encourage students to read during the summer months.
Buddy's Book Club - Summer Edition, Presented by Statoil, is designed to engage and excite children in reading during the school vacation. Children are encouraged to read for just 20 minutes a day during the summer months. By reading as little as 20 minutes a day, each child will accumulate 20 hours of reading during the summer.
"Reading is such a fundamental building block of a child's education, and lays the foundation for future success in life," said IceCaps President and CEO Danny Williams. "That's why we are so proud to partner with Statoil to promote Buddy's Book Club - Summer Edition.
"Even as our province's children enjoy their well-deserved summer vacation, we want to find ways to encourage them to continue to read and expand their minds. I have always said that for me personally, reading is one of the keys to success, and I am so pleased that we are able to use the IceCaps Care Foundation and Buddy the Puffin to promote the benefits of this activity. Particularly in today's world of computers, electronic games and so on, I think it is more important than ever to encourage our kids to pick up a book and read."
The IceCaps are committed to youth, health and wellness, as well as education through its community initiatives. This program will have students and their parents download a reading tracking sheet from the team's website to follow their progress. These same students will be eligible for various prize packages through the IceCaps.
As part of the unveiling of this program, IceCaps player Jason King and Buddy the Puffin visited Mary Queen of Peace School on Torbay Road this morning to visit with the students there, and explain the program. They were joined by IceCaps Director of Community Partnerships, Trevor Murphy.
"The IceCaps are proud to start Buddy's Book Club as a way to encourage students across Newfoundland and Labrador to read during the summer months," Mr. Murphy said. "By participating in this program, not only will young children get the benefits from reading daily, but they will also be eligible to win some very nice prizes from the St. John's IceCaps during the 2012-13 season.
"We're not only targeting schools and students. Sports associations, youth clubs and other organizations are also invited to participate. Anybody who has an interest in getting children to read can participate."
Another key element of the program is the commitment from Statoil to its success. A great community partner, Statoil's Vice President for Offshore Upstream, Atle Aadland, says their association with the program stems from the desire to contribute to the community in which they conduct business.
"Reading increases our knowledge of the world around us and feeds our imaginations. Literacy is an essential life skill and it is important that we foster a love of reading in our children," says Aadland. "We are proud to support Buddy's Book Club Summer Edition as a part of our Heroes of Tomorrow program."
Participants can register through www.stjohnsicecaps.com and will be eligible for numerous prizes, to be announced at a later date.
