IceCaps Entertainment Announces Matinee NHL Game
September 4, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release
IceCaps Entertainment, in partnership with the City of St. John's, announced today that the New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators will play a matinee National Hockey League exhibition game on Monday, September 22nd at 3 p.m., in addition to the previously-announced 7:30 p.m. contest slated for that evening.
Tickets for the matinee game are $50.00 (plus applicable taxes) and will go on sale to the public Sunday, September 7th at noon. Tickets can be purchased at the Mile One Centre box office, by phone at 709-576-7657 or online at www.mileonecentre.com.
Danny Williams, President and CEO of IceCaps Entertainment, says IceCaps Entertainment is able to offer the matinee game thanks to support from the City of St. John's and corporate partners Scotiabank, Remax, The Telegram and Rogers Communications. Williams explained that just like the later contest, the matinee will feature a minimum of eight NHL veterans per team, as mandated by the league.
"This is a great opportunity for school-aged children, and all fans for that matter, to catch live NHL action right here at home," said Mr. Williams. "The matinee game will feature at least 16 NHL veterans, along with stars of tomorrow who will be jockeying for a roster spot on the big teams. This promises to result in fast-paced, action-packed hockey as players put it all out there in hopes of making the NHL.
"We are proud to help ensure as many people as possible are able to take in this once-in-a-lifetime experience to see an NHL game. That is why we added a matinee exhibition game, in hopes that as many people as possible will be able to participate. For most people, the costs of traveling to an NHL city, buying tickets, and staying in a hotel are really prohibitive . So the chance to pay just a fraction of that cost to see NHL action right here at Mile One is a fantastic opportunity."
Glenn Stanford, of IceCaps Entertainment, says it's expected the NHL superstars will play in the prime-time contest.
"Generally, in situations like this, teams play their big-name players in the 7:30 p.m., prime-time game, and a mix of prospects and veterans in the matinee game," said Mr. Stanford. "It's my understanding that will be the case in these games."
St. John's mayor Dennis O'Keefe says the city is proud to partner in this exciting day of NHL hockey in the capital city.
"St. John's is certainly a hockey town," said Mayor O'Keefe. "We are pleased to be able to support another opportunity for our residents to see high performance, professional sport here in our city."
The general managers of both the Islanders and Senators say their organizations are expecting enthusiastic crowds at both contests.
"The St. John's community has proven that it has a passionate group of hockey fans," Islanders General Manager Garth Snow said. "We're thrilled for the opportunity to bring a second game at Mile One Centre."
"The fan base in St. John's has always proven to be very supportive and we are excited at the opportunity to play two games in front of what we are sure will be an energetic crowd," said Senators General Manager Bryan Murray. "These games will be important evaluation tools for our organization and our players as we will have a number of young people in camp who are expected to push hard to make our NHL roster."
