BOARDMAN, Ohio (Wednesday, March 12, 2008) - The Mahoning Valley Phantoms Figure Skating Club will be hosting the Grassroots to Champions Seminar on Sunday, March 30 at the Ice Zone in Boardman.
The goal of the program is to help teach figure skaters and their coaches how to properly develop - from the very basics of the sport, all the way into a champion.
"This program comes in and shows alternative programs and coaching techniques from the beginner level all the way through Olympic level skating," says Phantoms figure skating director Skip Mackall. "They put it on in several areas, but this is the only place in this part of the country this year, so we are happy that it's here."
The seminar will include multiple on-ice sessions, with both group and private lessons, focusing on training skaters in a variety of jumps and spins, and will feature Dartfish technology, Champion Cords, and muscle memory drills.
Additionally, the one-day camp will include off-ice training in strength and conditioning, air positions, body alignment, and competition preparation. Parents are encouraged to participate in the "Parents Chat," and coaches are allowed to attend all sessions.
The Grassroots to Champions Seminar coaches include two-time U.S. Olympic Team coach Audrey Weisiger, and master figure skating coaches Sheila Thelen and Nick Perna.
"Our program has grown so much that we wanted to be able to supply the skaters in the area with Olympic-quality coaching, so we are happy to have Audrey come here," says Mackall. "We have over 25 of our figure skating club members involved, and we've had even more contact us in the past few days to be part of it."
The cost of the seminar is $160 for skaters and $60 for coaches. Coaches with four or more registered students at the program will be admitted free of charge. Lunch will be provided for an addition al $10 per person. Registration is due by March 21.
For more information on the program or to sign up, contact Skip Mackall with the Mahoning Valley Phantoms Figure Skating Club at (330) 965-1423.
The Phantoms Figure Skating Club and the Ice Zone are sponsored by the B.J. Alan Co. - Phantom Fireworks, located in Youngstown, Ohio.
