Ice shut out Gamblers

April 18, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Indiana Ice News Release

For the second time in as many nights, the scoreboard looked the same.

It was the end result, however, that was the most special as the 1-0 shutout of the Green Bay Gamblers propelled the Eastern Conference regular-season champions over the host Gamblers and into the Eastern Conference finals.

The odds favored Jason Pawloski again as his 22 saves earned the narrow victory in the lone-goal contest while Denis Smirnov tallied the matches' only lamplighter.

There weren't many penalties in the first 40 minutes (six penalty minutes) as the bitter rivals battled to represent the Eastern Conference in the Clark Cup Finals, but Indy only needed 72 of 120 penalty seconds to make Green Bay resent the high sticking call as Smirnov redirected a Matt Roy shot from the point for the 1-0 tally.

Roy launched a laser from the blue line where the Penn State-commit Smirnov's stick caught enough of the biscuit to sneak past Gamblers' goaltender Jared Rutledge for the second Ice goal in the past 48 hours, but enough for the 1-0 win.

The victory advances Indy to the Eastern Conference finals against the winner of the Dubuque Fighting Saints and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. Game one and two of the finals will be played at Pan Am Pavilion on Friday (4/25) and Saturday (4/26) at 7:05 pm.
