Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Two first period goals propelled the Indiana Ice to a 4-1 victory over the Waterloo Black Hawks Friday during Game Three of the Clark Cup Finals at Pan Am Arena in Indianapolis.

Indiana has now earned a two-games-to-one lead during the best of five Championship Series.

A collision between Brandon Montour and Mitch Hults shattered a pane of glass at center ice 8:12 into the first period. Following the resulting 17 minute stoppage, the Ice took over what had been an evenly-played period. Tyler Pham stepped around a defender in transition, received a feed from Joe Sullivan, and flipped a shot under the crossbar at 12:45. With 1:46 remaining in the period, Pham was on the setup end of Indiana's second goal, passing the puck from behind the net to Patrick Newell, who drove to the crease for the marker.

During the middle period, the teams exchanged late goals. Hults lifted a shot to the top corner during a power play at 18:12. He was set up by a pass across the high slot from Scott Conway. However, Waterloo's Patrick Russell answered with 15 seconds remaining before intermission. The rebound of Brandon Montour's shot came to Russell in the slot, and he found room to slip the puck past Jason Pawloski.

The Hawks could not draw closer in the third, eventually pulling Cal Petersen for an extra attacker. However, Alex Talcott was able to tap the puck to the Waterloo line, and Conway slipped it into an open net with 1:43 remaining to cement the outcome. The Hawks outshot the Ice in the second and third periods, finishing the contest with a 29-25 edge in chances. Pawloski made 28 saves, while Petersen stopped 21.

Game Four of the Clark Cup Finals will be played in Indianapolis Saturday. The opening faceoff between the Black Hawks and Ice is slated for 6:05 p.m. If necessary, a fifth contest during the series would be held at Young Arena in Waterloo on Tuesday evening.
