Connor McClennon scored the game winning goal 2:59 into the third period to give the Winnipeg ICE a 5-3 decision over the Moose Jaw Warriors Friday night at the ICE Cave inside Wayne Fleming Arena.
Graham Sward's goal three minutes later secured the victory for the ICE to give them a 1-0 lead in the WHL's Eastern Conference Semi Final series.
Owen Pederson, Zach Benson and Matthew Savoie paced Winnipeg to a 3-0 advantage in the opening frame.
Brayden Yager, Max Wanner and Jagger Firkus replied for Moose Jaw to even the game heading into the third period.
McClennon led Winnipeg with five shots on goal as they outshot the Warriors 37-29. Ryder Korczak and Denton Mateychuk each had five shots as well for the visitors.
ICE goaltender Daniel Hauser made 26 saves while Moose Jaw's Connor Ungar stopped 32.
Both teams went 1/2 on the power play.
Game 2 is tomorrow (Saturday) night, 6:00 at the ICE Cave inside Wayne Fleming Arena.
