Ice Lands Former ECHL All-Star in Guenther
September 22, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Indianapolis Ice News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN-- The Indianapolis Ice announced today that the team has signed right winger Joe Guenther to a contract for next year.
Guenther, 22, lands in Indianapolis after a successful first-year campaign in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) playing for the Baton Rouge Kingfish and the Toledo Storm. He spent the majority of the year with Baton Rouge and was the team's lone representative in the 2003 ECHL All-Star Game.
In 55 combined games with Toledo and Baton Rouge, the big winger compiled 43 points (17G, 26A) in just 55 games of work. His 17 goals and seven power play goals with the Kingfish were good for third and second on the team at season's end.
"Joe brings size and scoring to the table," said Ice Head Coach Ken McRae. "He is a solid up and down winger who put up good numbers in his first year as a pro. I expect more of the same in year number two.
Before turning pro, the 6-0, 215-pound winger played three years of junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with Erie and Toronto. He averaged a point a game in his three years of juniors as he totaled 118 points (59G, 59A) in just 117 games of work. His signing with the Ice re-unites him with current Iceman Jason Baird as the duo were teammates in 2000-01 with Erie.
In other news, the Ice added defensemen Steve Lecuyer and Justin Barauska to its training camp roster. Lecuyer has spent the last three season with the Portage Terries of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) where he posted 37 points (10G, 27A) and 420 penalty minutes in 161 games, while Barauska split last year with Fresno of the West Coast Hockey League (WCHL) and Cape Fear of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League (ACHL).
The Ice will open training camp the week of October 6th-10th and the team takes the ice for its home opener on Saturday, October 18th when the team hosts the Shreveport Mudbugs at 7:00 p.m. from the Pepsi Coliseum.
