Laredo Bucks News Release
LAREDO, Texas â Monday morning the Laredo Bucks announced the signing of goalie David Guerrera to a contract for the upcoming 2003-04 Central Hockey League season. The Bucks take to the Laredo Entertainment Center ice for their first ever pre-season home game on Saturday, October 11th against Rio Grande Valley. For tickets stop by the LEC box office, go online at www.ticketmaster.com, or charge by phone (956) 712-1566.
Guerrera, 5'11 190-pounds, played four years of college hockey at Wayne State which is located in Detroit. The native of St. Leonard, Quebec, helped lead his team to three straight College Hockey America conference titles and a berth in the 2003 NCAA tournament.
"I talked with David early in the summer because I had heard about what he can do and we were looking for a young quality goalie," said Bucks Head Coach / General Manager Terry Ruskowski. "David had some impressive stats that caught my eye including a 90% save percentage all four years in college. I talked with his college coach and the coaches who coached against him and they spoke very highly of him."
The 24-year old Guerrera graduated this spring with a degree in exercise science.
"I am excited about pro hockey," said Guerrera. "The last four years with college hockey we have played just two games a week and about 40 games a season. Now I get a chance to be playing every other day or so in the pros."
Guerrera, who's parents hail from Italy, speaks three languages (English, French and German).
"While I am in Laredo I might as well learn Spanish," joked Guerrera.
Being tri-lingual has helped Guerrera fit in where ever he has gone, but the language of goaltending has always spoken loudest for him.
"I started playing goalie my first year of hockey," said Guerrera. "We would rotate position and no one seemed to want to go in net so I would always volunteer. Maybe it came from being a soccer goalie."
Each CHL team is required to carry three rookies. A player is considered a rookie when he has played in 25 or less professional games.
