Rivalry night has come once again in the Subway Hub Centre as the Battle of Manitoba took the primetime slot on Wednesday night with second place Brandon Wheat Kings taking on the third place Winnipeg ICE. Looking for their seventh straight victory, the ICE looked to Gage Alexander between the pipes tonight as they seek their first victory over their Manitoban rival this season. Connor Ungar got the nod for the Wheat Kings who were looking to make it two in-a-row after a 8-3 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors last night.
It was Wheat Kings forward Riley Ginnell who would score the game's first goal just 1:52 into the first period. After receiving a pass from Nolan Ritchie, Ginnell drove into the zone and fired one top right corner past Alexander's glove. Brandon would double their lead at 9:10 as Ty Thorpe found Brett Hyland in front of the net, who then shovelled it just above Alexander's pad. Shots were 14-10 in favour of Winnipeg after the first period.
The ICE would cut the deficit to one as Connor McClennon fired home a loose puck in the crease during a delayed penalty for Brandon. Peyton Krebs and Owen Pederson would draw the assists on the goal that came at 4:55. Brandon would retake their two goal lead as Ben McCartney finished a nice tic-tac-toe play with Chad Nychuk and Ridley Greig. Winnipeg would respond on the power-play as Conor Geekie delivered a missile to the top right corner, bringing the ICE back within one goal. Winnipeg continued to lead in shots, 26-20 after two.
Brandon regained their two goal lead again at 7:18 when McCartney stole the puck and went in on a 2-on-0 with Jake Chiasson. McCartney stumbled but shot the puck from his knees, past Alexander's right pad to take the 4-2 lead. The back-and-forth game continued as Pederson batted in a rebounded Ben Zloty shot on the power-play to cut the lead to one goal. That was as close as the ICE would come however, as McCartney would complete the hat-trick on the empty net for the 5-3 win. Shots finished 41-25 in favour of Winnipeg.
The ICE are back in action on Friday as the face the Swift Current Broncos. Puck drop is at 7:00pm CT.
