Demonz Shut Out Dashers, 4-0
Final Regular Season Game to Determine First Place
(Dayton, Ohio) If you would have asked Demonz head coach Trevor Karasiewicz before the season started if he had the opportunity to win the Federal Hockey League (FHL) regular season championship having to win the final two games of the season on home ice, I am sure he would have said yes. This is what we have, the final two games of the regular season on home ice, with the benefit of the home crowd behind them. A golden opportunity for a bye in the first round of the play-offs, along with the title is what the Demonz are privileged to winning both games, it is theirs. The Demonz have earned and worked hard not to take advantage of this golden opportunity.
But first things first, one game at a time, the Demonz host the Danville Dashers, and a win tonight gives Dayton the opportunity to play the Danbury Whalers tomorrow night for the regular season title.
Dayton controlled the first 20 minutes of play, playing a solid all-around team game, creating quality scoring chances and out shooting Danville 18-10, and Dayton taking a 2-0 lead in the first period. Danville goaltender Matt Anthony was tested by the Demonz throughout the period.
Dayton would take a 1-0 lead controlling in the Danville zone, with the puck on Demonz Lee McClure stick at the right point, he ripped a slap-shot through traffic in front of the Danville net which was tipped in by Jason Pietrasiak a little over 2 minutes into the game.
The Demonz would make it 2-0. McClure would add his and Dayton's 2nd goal of the game at 10:26 off the rush Pietrasiak making a drop pass to McClure who blasted a shot into the top right corner of the Danville net from the right face-off circle.
The second period saw Danville playing a better team game, as they were able create some offense early in the period, but unable to put the puck past Demonz goaltender Jeff Rose. The Demonz gradually worked their way into an offensive attack they displayed in the 1st period. The Dashers did not help their cause; with Dayton taking control at even strength and scoring on one of their three man advantages to take a 3-0 lead into the 3rd period.
Dayton in the second half of the 2nd period spent extended time in the Danville zone with the Dashers unable to clear the puck out of their zone. With Dayton on the power-play, Jesse Felten gave the Demonz a 3-0 lead with just over 5 minutes left in the period. Felten's 34th goal of the season, was scored from the low slot, with a little help from his friends (as the two Demonz screened a helpless Matt Anthony).
Dayton took a 4-0 lead killing on the penalty kill. Ahmed Mahfouz would add to the Demonz lead (scoring his league leading 41st goal of the season) with a short-handed goal 30 seconds into the finale frame. Mahfouz took the puck from inside his own blue line, breaking free of the Danville defense, and scoring on the breakaway, going back hand on Anthony.
