A League of Their Own

(Dayton, Ohio) The Cape Cod Bluefins were welcomed to Hara Arena with a 9 to 3 thumping by the first place Dayton Demonz. The Demonz have made Hara Arena a very uncomfortable place for visiting teams this year. The Demonz remain undefeated at home with 4 wins and 0 losses.

Something is strange when two defenseman Tyler Howe (6-5) of Cape Cod, and (5-10) James Sanford of Dayton took the center position for the opening face-off. When the puck dropped so did the gloves. What team was trying to send a message David or Goliath?

Both teams had offensive opportunities with play going end to end. The difference is Dayton capitalized on their scoring opportunities to take a 4 to 1 lead going into the first intermission.

Dayton got on the board first, when Cape Cod turned over the puck in front of their goalie and an opportunistic Nick Petriello scored at 4:04. Cape Cod scored 41 seconds later off the rush when Chris Campanale beat the Dayton goalie to tie the game at 1-1. Dayton would score the next 3 goals, on an offensive rush by Luke Flicek, a power play goal by Ahmed Mahfouz, and Jason Hill would score with 38 seconds left in the period, as Cape Cod's power play expired.

They say the best defense, is a strong offense. Dayton did just this in the 2nd frame. The Demonz controlled play in the Bluefins zone for extended periods of time. Outscoring the Bluefins 4-1(like the first period) to take and 8-2 lead after 2 periods of play. Dayton would continue to score by committee. Marcus Pryde, Seth Ronsberg (2 goals), and Jesse Felton would lead the Demonz charge. Taylor Larsen would add Cape Cod's lone goal on the power play.

Both teams exchanged goals in the 3rd period. Cape Cod would score on the power-play (5 on 4) Nick Wheeler's shot from the point to make it 8-3. Dayton would answer with a goal that floated over the goalie into the back of the net on Luke Flicek 2nd goal of the game to seal the victory 9 - 3.

Both teams meet tomorrow night with a 7:35 start time at historic Hara Arena.
