HYANNIS, MA - They say familiarity breeds contempt. In the Federal Hockey League, it also breeds tight, defensive hockey. Friday night, the Danbury Whalers got their first shutout of the season as goaltender Peter Vetri turned aside all 41 Cape Cod Bluefin shots as the Whalers won 1-0 at the Hyannis Youth Community Center.

The teams skated a scoreless first period with good end-to-end action. The Whalers took a 1-0 lead in the second as 6'6" defenseman Anthony Pisano uncorked a blast from above the circles. His first goal as a Whaler, and third of the season, came from Matt Caranci and Matt Moffat at 8:14. That was all Vetri got and that's all he needed. The third period saw a repeat of the first period. The Whalers killed all six Cape Cod man advantages, including three in the final period. Vetri was steady all night and his defense kept second chances to a minimum. His opposition Wes Vesperini was again solid against the Whalers, stopping 23 of 24 shots. The win gave Danbury their fifth win in a row, tying the season-high winning streak from November, and the team's seventh in nine games against the Bluefins.

The Whalers go for the weekend road sweep as they travel to New Jersey tomorrow night to face the first-place New Jersey Outlaws. It is the Livesportsvideo.com's Game of the Week. Action at the Capitol One Ice Vault in Wayne begins at 7:35. The Whalers will return to the Danbury Ice Arena on Saturday, January 28th as the Whalers face rival Brooklyn. Whalers Stuff the Bluefins 1-0

Hyannis - A lively crowd of hockey fans came to the Hyannis Youth and Community Center last night and witnessed a well-played game between Federal Hockey League arch enemies Danbury Whalers and the home town Cape Cod Bluefins. On a night when the Bluefins and the Army National Guard honored the Division 2A High School Super Bowl Champions from Dennis-Yarmouth High School, the action was furious from the opening faceoff. The Whalers shut out the hometown squad 1-0 behind an unbelievable performance by goalie, Peter Vetri.

A relatively clean game, the pace remained swift as there were many big hits and several great scoring chances including a breakaway by Bluefins defenseman Sam Sabky that Vetri turned aside with a kick save. It wasn't until 9:08 of the second period that the visitors took a 1-0 lead when Anthony Pisano fired a high wrist shot through a screen of bodies that eluded rookie goaltender goalie Wes Vesprini. In an otherwise solid performance it was a goal that Vesprini probably wishes he could get back. The shots after 2 periods the score remained 1-0 and the total shots on goal were 28-18 in favor of the Bluefins who have become accustomed to out shooting their opponents but, on this night struggled to score goals at the other end despite many good opportunities.

The third period began and remained just as the first two were played. Fast, furious and full of action. If not for the outstanding net minding by Vetri, the Fins could have won this game handedly but the 26 year old back stop from Windam New Hampshire showed why he is one of the Whalers best players. In total, Vetri stopped all 41 shots that came his way and earned the shutout for the visitors. The home town boys are not to be discounted as they played a good professional hockey game despite not being able to find the back of the net and not being able to cash in on six power plays. Vesprini, aside from the one goal also had a solid outing in which he saved 22 of 23 shots.

The Bluefins are in action again tonight as they take on the Brooklyn Aviators at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center. Game time is at 7:05 pm and the Bluefins and The Army National Guard will again honor another Cape Cod High School Super Bowl Champion , Mashpee High School.

Schott, Watson Power Aviators Past Outlaws, 6-1 BROOKLYN, New York - The Brooklyn Aviators picked up their first win of the season over the New Jersey Outlaws 6-1 at the Aviator Sports and Events Center in Federal Hockey League action on Friday night. Lucas Schott and Chase Watson each had four points in the win, but it was Schott though turning in a hat trick for Brooklyn.

Brooklyn jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first period of play. Casey Mignone put the A's on top 1-0 4:14 into the opening frame, as his wrister beat Outlaws netminder Adam Dekker glove side. Schott would get his first of two at the 9:21 mark doubling Brooklyn's edge 2-0, while his second of the period came on a backhand that chased Dekker from the cage with 4:37 left in the first.

The power play fueled the second period offensively for the Aviators, as the club scored two goals on the man advantage to take a 5-0 lead over the Outlaws. Schott completed the hat trick after his third goal of the contest put Brooklyn up 4-0 just 2:24 in. Watson collected his first of the game, also on the power play, after his snap shot beat new Outlaws goalie Dan McWhinney at the 11:17 spot of the frame.

Brendan Baumgartner scored the sixth goal for the Aviators in the game 2:17 into the third period, but Outlaws forward Matt Puntureri spoiled Brooklyn netminder Jo St. Pierre's shutout bid on a short-handed tally with 1:30 left in the game.

St. Pierre picked up his sixth win of the year stopping 34 shots, while Dekker is charged with the loss after only making 10 saves.

The Aviators return to action tomorrow night when they take on the Cape Cod Bluefins for the final time at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 PM, and can be viewed live via the Bluefins broadcast network, powered by LiveSportsVideo.com.

Floodgates Open Against Federals

What started as a tight matchup between the 1000 Islands Privateers and upstart FHL new entry the Deleware Federals ended in a 21-0 rout of the expansion team in a home game contest at the Bonnie Castle Rec Center. The win brings the Privateers record to 23-6 and trailing league leading New Jersey by 3.

Under most occasions, these press releases illustrate the battle between both clubs and list the scoring and assists. In this case, however, the extent of the one sided match offers only a glimpse at the highlights of the night. The first 17:48 of the 1st saw an evenly balanced contest as both clubs fought for possession and traversed the ice on many sorties into opponent territory, with Delaware holding their own against the 2nd place Privateers. However, once 1000 Islands cracked the net, the levee broke and the rout began.

Brad Smulders and Paul Kelly led the Privateers scoring assault with four goals each on the night, with Adam McAllister, Jeremy Akeson, and Brad Townsend all netting two goals apiece. Chase Tippin, James Brooks, Jeff Winchester, Brad Pawlowski and Justin Levac all added their own scores to augment the tally. Corey Lauryson started it all off for 1000 Islands late in the 1st.

The Privateers host the next game against returning Danville tomorrow night. The puck drops at 7:05pm at the Bonnie Castle Rec Center in Alex Bay.

Dashers Come Back Late in Third to Force OT

Akwesasne - The Danville Dashers would not go away easily tonight as they took the Warriors to overtime at the Anowarako:wa Arena. Danville, playing their eighth road game in ten nights, took to the ice flying and opened the scoring at the 5:36 mark of the first on a Dustin Skinner goal. Pierre Dagenais tied it up four minutes later pounding in his own rebound as Dasher goalie Lindoff was out of the play after making a big save. Ky Moje gave the Dahsers a one goal lead at the 14:26 mark to round out the scoring for the first.

The Warriors carried the play in the second period in this fast paced hard hitting game. The Warriors had a goal called back half way through the second as the puck slid into the net after referee, Michael Plante, blew the play dead.

The Warriors took to the ice in the third and turned up the pace scoring an early Dagenais power play goal to tie it up. Dagenais threaded the needle as Lindoff hugged the post, lifting a shot high into the short side top corner. Addison Pelkey gave the Warriors their first lead of the night 1:45 later with his seventh of the season. Nicholas Corbeil gave the Warriors a two goal lead with a powerplay marker of his own at 15:12 of the third. The Warriors were two for two on the power play, scoring both goals in the third. Akwesasne carried the play for most of the period, out-shooting the Dashers 15 to 6 but the Dashers refused to go away and put the pressure on the Warriors with Ryan Stern scoring with 1:35 left in regulation and Billy Hunt getting the equalizer fifty seven seconds later as Lindoff raced to the bench for the extra attacker.

The Warriors dominated the Dashers in the three on three overtime period out-shooting their opponents 6-1. Pierre Dagenais ended the game at the 1:32 mark with a hard rising shot to the glove side. Dagenais ended the night with a hat trick goal, his league leading thirty ninth. This was the Dashers second overtime loss in two nights and their third one goal loss in the past three nights. The Dashers end their lengthy road trip with a return visit to Bonnie Castle to play 1000 Islands tomorrow.

The Warriors have four days off before facing the league leading New Jersey Outlaws on January 25 and 26 at the Anowarako:wa Arena. Both games are 7:05 starts.
