No Friday 13th Curse Here: Whalers Sink Privateers 5-3

DANBURY, CT - Danbury Whalers center Chris Seifert scored with 3:45 left in the contest to break a 3-3 tie as the Whalers defeated the 1000 Islands Privateers 5-3 at the Danbury Ice Arena in Federal Hockey League. On Friday the 13th, the Whalers avoided the hex and stretched their winning streak to three games with a four-goal final frame and avenged two earlier losses to the Privateers.

The sudden arrival of winter in the Northeast delayed the start of the contest as the Privateers slogged down Interstate 81 through snow and ice. Once the game started, the visitors got the lone goal of the first period as Justin Levac tallied. Alec Kirschner tied the game at 6:10 of the second period as Seifert and returning captain Nick Deschenes set him up. Levac gave 1000 Islands the lead a few minutes later and the Privateers led entering the final period. The Whalers starting line tied the game in the third, as Matt Moffat and Sean O'Malley found Kelly Miller for his 15th goal of the season and Miller's first against his former team at 4:39. The Whalers took their first lead of the game as Kirschner tallied on the power play from Deschenes and Seifert at 12:01. However, 1000 Islands tied the game as Paul Kelly scored on the power play with just over five minutes to go. Tension built with each shot and pass. The Seifert line broke the deadlock at 16:15 of the third. Deschenes crossed the blue line on the near side, passed to Kirschner in the middle, who left it for Seifert on the far end. Seifert uncorked a one-timer that went above the shoulder of Matt Anthony for his 14th of the year and sent the crowd into hysteria. Kirschner completed the hat trick with an empty netter with 29 seconds left from James Sanford and Lynn Beedle. Peter Vetri stopped 43 of 46 shots for the win, while Anthony saved 48 shots in the loss.

The Whalers looked to go 4-for-4 in this homestand as they close it out tomorrow night against Danville. Game time at the Ice Arena is set for 7:35. Tickets are available for this week and all upcoming Whalers games. Get your tickets by visiting thedanburywhalers.com or by calling 973-713-7547.
