Ice Add Skilled Centerman on Verge of Camp

October 6, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Indianapolis Ice News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN-- The Indianapolis Ice announced today that the team has signed centerman Russ Guzior to a contract for this season. Guzior will take the ice Wednesday afternoon with the rest of the team for training camp.

A 1993 NHL Draft Pick of the Montreal Canadiens, Guzior averaged nearly a point a game last season (53 points in 55 games) for a dismal El Pazo Buzzards club that was the worst team in the CHL’s Southern Conference. He finished first on the squad in goals (29) and was the only Buzzards player to earn CHL Player of the Week Honors last year.

“Russ will help us down the middle where we need to replace some key players from last season,” said Ice Head Coach Ken McRae. “He had a solid year in a tough situation in El Paso last season and I believe he will blend in well with our current group of skilled wingers.”

The native of Chicago, IL, has played six professional seasons with stops in the American Hockey League (AHL), East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), United Hockey League (UHL) and CHL. His six-year totals amount to 275 points (130G, 145A) in 372 games. He played collegiately for the Providence College Friars of hockey’s powerful Hockey East Conference and was the team’s leading scorer in his junior and senior seasons. Overall, he produced 107 points (42G, 65A) in 117 games at Providence.

In other news, the Ice added four players to its training camp roster in forwards Jay Stewart and Josh Wall, defenseman Karl Gartly and goaltender Jason Tapp. Stewart played collegiately at Wisconsin-Superior (NCAA-III) and was the captain of the team’s 2002 NCAA Championship squad. Wall played the last few years in Canada for the Port Colborne Sailors (Golden Horseshoe Jr. B) while Gartly spent last season in Germany. Tapp was a four-year letterman at Boston University (Hockey East-NCAA-I) and made his pro debut last year for Knoxville of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League and a team in Holland.

The Ice takes the ice for the first time in training camp this Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. and the team’s regular season home opener is slated for Saturday, October 18th when the team hosts the Shreveport Mudbugs at 7:00 p.m. from the Pepsi Coliseum.
