Toronto Maple Leafs 6; Guelph Royals 3

The Toronto Maple Leafs pounded out 18 hits and left 13 men on base, but still capitalized enough to defeat the Guelph Royals 6-3 in Intercounty Baseball League play Saturday night in Guelph. Toronto (13-13) is back at the .500 mark with the victory and moved into fourth place in the tight IBL standings with the win - their second straight - and their eighth in their last 11 games. The Leafs host the third place Barrie Baycats on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Dominico Field at Christie Pits. Despite squandering multiple opportunities to make the game a rout, the Leafs did muster enough offence to support Clay Caulfield's solid starting pitching to pick up an important win against one of the teams in the logjam for playoff positioning in the IBL.

Caulfield (4-0) pitched a complete game for the Leafs, allowing three runs on nine hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk. Caulfield has been one of the Leafs more reliable pitchers all season and was again on Saturday, giving the Leafs their second complete game in a row with his 135-pitch effort which left his ERA at 1.92. Toronto left 13 runners on base, but still gave Caulfield all the run support he would need with three runs in the fifth inning making the difference. Will Richards led the offence with three hits and three RBI, while Aaron Guinn also had three hits and drove in a run. Jordan Castaldo had three hits for Toronto, while Damon Topolie and Raul Borjas each contributed two hits and an RBI. Dan Marra also chipped in with two hits for the winners.

Guelph starter Adam Reynolds was the loser. He went 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on 14 hits with a strikeout to take the loss. The Royals slipped to 13-14 with the defeat, slipping a half game behind the Leafs in the standings. Mark Allen had two hits and scored twice and Jeremy Ware also had two hits for the Royals, who were also hurt by three errors.
