Barrie 10 Burlington 3
The Barrie Baycats beat the Burlington Bandits in a meeting of teams at opposite ends of the spectrum in the IBL standings. Barrie has a firm grasp on first place with a record of 11-2 in the 2014 campaign while Burlington sits near the cellar with a record of 3-9.
Brad Bissell was credited with the win for Barrie with a solid start, going six innings and striking out seven. Bissell gave up only two earned runs and the Baycat's offence provided more than enough run support.
Barrie's Brendan Keys had three hits and Jonathan Fernandez had two hits, two RBI, scored twice and stole a base. Matt Logan launched his first home run of the season and drew three walks in the game for the Baycats.
Matthew St. Kitts took the loss going 5 2/3 innings striking out four but giving up seven hits and five walks. The Bandits had three hits each from Jim Martin and Tyler Patzalek.
The two teams square off again on Tuesday evening when Burlington travels to Barrie.
Guelph 13 London 8
The Guelph Royal's Gavin Free earned the win in a game that was from a pitcher's duel. Guelph and London combined for 29 hits and 21 runs with the Royals getting 17 and scoring 13 runs. Guelph's well-balanced attack was enough to defeat the Majors 13-8.
Free went seven innings striking out eight London batters and allowing three earned runs. Brett Sabourin took the loss for London going five innings and giving up 12 hits and seven runs although only three of those runs were earned.
The Royals offence had a number of standouts on the day. Keith Kandel had two hits, a walk and scored twice and has a .393 batting average for the year. Bruce Yari had two hits and drove in four runs. Brian Doran had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run. Justin Interisano hit his first home run of the season and drove in four runs. Josh Garton continues his hot hitting and had two hits and collected another RBI. He currently sits first in the league in RBI, second in home runs and sixth in batting with a .385 average.
While the Royals had several players have an impact at the plate, one name stood out for the Majors on Saturday afternoon. Paul LaMantia had three hits, two doubles and home run, and drove in six of the Major's eight runs.
Guelph plays again on Sunday when they travel to Kitchener to take on the Panthers. London hosts Brantford Sunday afternoon.
Brantford 9 Hamilton 0
The Brantford Red Sox utilized a strong start from pitcher Andrew vantWout and a strong hitting display to overwhelm the Hamilton Cardinals 9-0. vantWout went 6 1/3 innings, allowing only three hits and striking out four Cardinals.
Chris Stewart, Ben Bostick and Terrell Alliman had solid nights at the plate to pace the Red Sox.
Michael Gottschalk took the loss for Hamilton after a rough five-inning start. In those five innings, he gave up nine runs on 12 hits and six walks. Hamilton had a tough night trying to put together any kind of offence against a strong Brantford squad.
Hamilton plays on Sunday when the visit the Toronto Maple Leafs. Brantford travels to London Sunday afternoon to take on the Majors.
