SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Blaze defensive back David Hyland has been named the Riddell Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the team's 52-48 victory over the Spokane Shock, the Arena Football League announced Tuesday.
"It's an honor to be acknowledged for hard work. We put in a lot of time and it reflected in our performance," said Hyland. "I can't take credit for doing anything more than my own job, but it feels good to be named defensive MVP by Riddell. God is good."
With just 11 seconds remaining on the clock, Hyland (6-0, 190, Morehead State) broke to his left and deflected a pass in the end zone intended for Shock wide receiver Adron Tennell on fourth down. The pass breakup ended Spokane's drive and secured the victory for the Blaze, who regained possession and ran out the clock.
Against the Shock, Hyland (6-0, 190, Morehead State) led all defenders with 6.5 total tackles while adding four pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. In addition, Hyland also handled kickoff return duties for Utah, gaining 51 yards on four attempts.
Now in his second season with the Blaze, Hyland has delivered 31 total tackles with three interceptions, nine pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble in six games.
