Halifax Hurricanes News Release
Halifax, NS -- The Halifax Hurricanes are pleased to announce the signing of Joe Haywood and Kareem Canty.
A former AUS star with the Saint Mary's Huskies, Joey Haywood makes his return to Halifax. Haywood led the AUS in scoring in all three of his seasons with the Huskies and still holds the AUS single-season record for total points with 575. He played three seasons with the Halifax Rainmen, twice winning the Canadian Player of the Year Award.
"I'm very excited to return to Halifax. Halifax is my basketball home and I look forward to contributing to the established success of the Hurricanes", said Haywood.
"We are very pleased to have Joey in Halifax. He has deep roots in the community on and off the court. He will add stability in our back court position and will make us stronger as a team", remarked Head Coach and General Manager Mike Leslie.
The Hurricanes also add 6'1"-185lb guard Kareem Canty to the lineup. A freshman at Marshall University in 2013-14, Canty played all 33 games, started 31 of them and lead the Thundering Herd in points (16.3 ppg) and assists (5.5 ppg). Canty transferred to Auburn University in 2014 and sat out the 2014-15 season due to NCAA transfer rules. In 2015-16 he emerged as Auburn's starting point guard averaging a team-high 18.3 points per game and team-leading 5.3 assists and 3 rebounds per contest.
Before signing with Halifax, Canty experienced some pro ball with the Tezenis Verona of the Italian A2 basketball league.
"We are very pleased for this opportunity to have quality player like Kareem Canty join our club. We are proud of his interest in coming to Halifax and his talent level will certainly add strength to our team," said Mike Leslie.
The Halifax Hurricanes look to improve to 7-0 on Thursday night. Game time is 7pm at Scotiabank Centre versus the Island Storm.
