RALEIGH, NC - Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled forward Brett Sutter from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL).
This marks the third NHL recall of the season for Sutter, 24, who has earned three assists in eight games this season with the Hurricanes. The Viking, Alb., native was named Charlotte's captain prior to the season, and has five goals and seven assists (12 points) in 28 games this year with the Checkers. He was the Checkers' leading scorer during last spring's Calder Cup Playoffs with 14 points (4g, 10a) in 16 games, helping the Checkers reach the conference finals.
Drafted by Calgary in the sixth round (179th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Sutter (6'0", 200 lbs.) has totaled one goal, four assists (5 points) and 23 penalty minutes in 27 career NHL games with Calgary and Carolina. In 300 career regular-season AHL games with Quad City, Abbotsford and Charlotte, he has notched 92 points (37g, 55a) and 289 penalty minutes. Prior to turning professional, Sutter played four seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with Kootenay and Red Deer, tallying 138 points (58g, 80a) and 274 penalty minutes. He is the older cousin of Hurricanes alternate captain Brandon Sutter.
