Hurricanes Appoint New Coach/GM
Halifax, NS - The Halifax Hurricanes appoint Kevin Keathley as Head Coach and General Manager for the 2016-17 season.
The Hurricanes discussed a return to Halifax with 2015-16 Coach of the Year, Hugo Lopez, however the two sides were unable to come to terms. The Club was overwhelmed with the interest of highly qualified applicants for the new position. Coach Keathley will assume the duties of managing basketball operations for the club as well as Head Coach.
"We are very excited to find a coach of Kevin's calibre to follow in the footsteps of Hugo Lopez who lead us to a Championship last season. He is a coach who understands what is needed to build a competitive team and to be part of the community", remarked Don Mills, Chair of the Board.
With over fifteen years of coaching experience at the college and professional levels, Coach Keathley has never had a losing season. "I couldn't be more excited to be given the opportunity to lead one of the cornerstone franchises of NBL Canada", said Keathley. "What the front office, Coach Lopez, the players and the community have accomplished last season is nothing short of remarkable. The great fans in Halifax should be very proud of their championship and I am excited to continue what Coach Lopez has started."
Kevin Keathley has coached teams within every professional basketball league outside of the NBA. He has guided two teams to championships and has earned Coach of the Year twice along the way. Most recently, Coach Keathley was the bench boss for the Bowling Green Bandits (2013-2015) of the American Basketball Association (ABA). The Bandits recorded 25 wins and 3 losses over two seasons under Keathley's leadership.
Selected as one of the top 10 Coaches in America not in the NBA (2009), Coach Keathley guided the South East Texas Mavericks to a ABA Championship in 2010 finishing with a 24-8 record. Keathley was named Coach of the Year in 2010 and then spent a brief period of time as an assistant coach in the NBA Development League in 2011. Kevin resigned this position to become the Head Coach of the Sauk Valley Predators of the Premier Basketball League for 2011-2012 season.
Known for his fast paced, up-tempo offensive philosophy, Coach Keathley is committed to making a positive community impact off the court. "We will build a championship quality team on and off the court. We will have great players, but maybe even more importantly, great people who will embrace our community", said Coach. "It's going to be an exciting season as we look to defend the title against some of the best coaches and players in professional basketball."
