Huntsville Stars Hold Off Suns on Sunday

Huntsville, Ala. - The Huntsville Stars (6-4) opened an early lead and held off a late rally by the Jacksonville Suns (4-6) as the Stars took the deciding game of the series by the final score of 6-5 in front of 929 Sunday at Joe Davis Stadium.

Huntsville starter Chris Cody (2-0) picked up the victory, allowing two earned runs over five and one-thirds innings with four walks and two strikeouts. Jacksonville starter Brad Stone (0-1) fell in the loss after giving up five runs over the first two innings before settling in to allow only two baserunners over the next three frames. After allowing an eighth inning homerun, Stars reliever Robert Hinton put the side down in order in the ninth inning to secure the save.

The Stars opened the scoring in the first inning with a pair of runs against Stone. Jonathan Lucroy knocked in the first run on a groundout before a Zelous Wheeler single made it 2-0. Huntsville added three more runs in the second inning, the first on a Brett Lawrie triple to bring in Lorenzo Cain for a 3-0 score. Lawrie later scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead. Jonathan Lucroy later walked with two out and scored on a Taylor Green double for a 5-0 lead.

Jacksonville started a rally in the fifth inning, after recording only one hit in the first four innings against Chris Cody. Ryan Curry led off with a double and later scored on a Lorenzo Scott two-out single for a 5-1 score.

The Suns added three more runs in the sixth inning. Lee Mitchell doubled and later scored on a Chris Hatcher single. Ryan Curry reached on a one-out walk and scored on an error by Huntsville second baseman Brett Lawrie for a 5-3 score. Lorenzo Scott next beat out a double-play groundball to drive in Hatcher, cutting the Huntsville lead to 5-4.

Huntsville added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Lucroy scored on a throwing error by third baseman Lee Mitchell for a 6-4 lead.

The Suns ended the scoring in the eighth inning when Tim Torres belted a solo homerun to right field, cutting the Stars lead to 6-5.
