Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, NC- For the second consecutive day, the Carolina Mudcats spotted the Montgomery Biscuits a big 5-1 lead before coming all the way back to win the game in their final at bat 8-7 on Sunday afternoon before 5,924 at Five County Stadium.
Montgomery (6-4) pushed across a run in the first off Mudcat starter Alexander Smit when Greg Sexton singled home Shawn O'Malley for the early one run lead. The Biscuits added four runs in the third when Ian Paxton looped a double just inside the right field line to clear the loaded bases and give Montgomery a 5-1 lead.
Carolina (6-4) then began on the comeback trail with two runs in the fourth on a Jose Castro two-run single and after a single run in the fifth, Carolina was within a run at 5-4. In the last of the seventh, Yonder Alonso belted his second home run in as many days to tie the score at five all.
However, Montgomery stormed right back in the top of the eight with two runs off Mudcat reliever Sean Watson, and after a scoreless ninth by Phillippe Valiquette, Carolina was down by just two going into their final at bat.
After a lead off double by Sean Danielson and a walk to Kris Negron, the Mudcats cut the lead to one run when, Yonder Alonso, collected his second RBI of the day on a single to right to cut the lead in half. The Biscuits intentionally walked Denis Phipps to load the bases for Eric Eymann, who, on a 0-2 pitch, lined a base hit past the dive of the Biscut first basemen Matt Fields to plate pinch runner, Michael Griffin and give the Mudcats a walk-off win.
The opening home stand will continue Monday for the Mudcats when the Tennesee Somkies visit Five County. First pitch of the five game series is slated for 7:15 on Monday night when Carolina will send Matt Klinker to the hill and the Smokies will counter with Andrew Cashner.
