HUNTSVILLE FLIGHT TO HONOR NASA ASTRONAUT JAN DAVIS WITH "HEROES AMONG US" AWARD

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., March 18, 2002 – NASA Astronaut Dr. Jan Davis has been selected by the Huntsville Flight to receive the "Heroes Among Us" award for the month of March. Davis will be honored at the end of the first quarter of today's Huntsville Flight game against the North Charleston Lowgators at 3 p.m. at the Von Braun Center.

A graduate of Huntsville High School, Davis became an astronaut in 1987 and is a veteran of three space flights. Dr. Davis has logged over 673 hours in space flying as a mission specialist on STS-47 in 1992 and STS-60 in 1994, and as the payload commander on STS-85 in 1997.

After her flight on STS-85, Dr. Davis was assigned to NASA Headquarters as the Director of the Human Exploration and Development of Space (HEDS), Independent Assurance Office for the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance. In July 1999, she was named the Deputy Director of the Flight Projects Directorate at the Marshall Space Flight Center.

In addition to two undergraduate degrees, Davis received a master of science degree and a doctorate in mechanical engineering from University of Alabama in Huntsville.

The "Heroes Among Us" award is presented by the NBDL to individual(s) who, through their unique commitment and humanitarian spirit, have made exceptional and lasting contributions to the local community. Award winners are selected based on recommendations from local community leaders, local news stories and recommendations by the Flight's 3-Point Leadership Council.

The National Basketball Development League tipped off its inaugural season on November 16, 2001. The Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), North Charleston Lowgators (S.C.), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Mobile Revelers (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.), Greenville Groove (S.C.), and Asheville Altitude (N.C.) will compete in a 56-game regular season schedule that runs from mid-November through March, followed by playoffs. A total of 24 games will be broadcast nationally on ESPN and ESPN2.
