Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Waldorf, MD - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs erased an early 2-0 deficit and scored eight unanswered runs en-route to an 8-2 series sweep of the Road Warriors on Thursday night at Regency Furniture Stadium in front of 4,108 faithful. It was the first sweep for the Blue Crabs since June 10-12 when they swept three games from the York Revolution at home.
The Road Warriors struck first by plating single runs in the first and second innings. Centerfielder Adrian Ortiz scored on a groundout by shortstop Danny Gonzalez to give the visitors a 1-0 lead, before a wild pitch from Blue Crabs starter Eddie Rodriguez allowed first baseman Melvin Dorta to score in the second to give the Road Warriors a two-run lead.
Southern Maryland tied things in the bottom of the second as centerfielder Jeremy Owens (13) hit a two-run blast over the leftfield wall. The Blue Crabs then took the lead in the third as first baseman Casey Benjamin looped a two-run single down the right field line to give the Blue Crabs a 4-2 lead.
The Blue Crabs would extend their lead with a two-run fourth thanks to RBI singles from right fielder Adam Godwin and second baseman Brandon Pinckney to make the count 6-2. Southern Maryland then added two more runs in the sixth as a sac fly by Pinckney and an RBI single from designated hitter Brian Barton made the final 8-2.
Southern Maryland got 13 hits for the game including two apiece from Owens, Pinckney, Barton, and catcher Christian Lopez. Owens finished the night 2-4 with a homer, double, two RBI and two runs scored. Pinckney had two RBI and scored a run, while Barton had a RBI and scored once. Lopez also scored a run on the night.
The Road Warriors, meanwhile, only had four hits, two of them registered by first baseman Melvin Dorta who also scored a run and stole a base.
Rodriguez (5-4) got the win after settling down and allowing only two runs on four hits in six innings. He also walked two and struck out six. Road Warriors starter Miguel Martinez (5-9) suffered the loss after going five innings and allowing six runs on eight hits.
The Blue Crabs will now welcome in the Camden Riversharks for a three-game series beginning Friday at 7:05. Southern Maryland will trot out right-hander Michael Schlact (5-3, 4.10 ERA) against southpaw Eddy Camacho (5-3, 4.46 ERA) of the Riversharks. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
