NEW YORK, June 1 – Tina Thompson of the Houston Comets was named the WNBA Player of the Week for games played Thursday, May 20 through Sunday, May 30.

Thompson scored a remarkable 38.3 percent of her team's points in Houston's five games while leading the Comets to a 3-2 start. The 6-2 forward is averaging a league-best 23.6 points per game and is ranked 15th in the league in rebounds per game (6.6), eighth in blocked shots per game (1.60), 16th in three-point field goal percentage (47.6) and third in minutes per game (36.6). Thompson's most impressive game of the season thus far came on May 23 when she established a new WNBA record by scoring 56.5 percent of her team's points (35 of 62). Her 35 points that evening also established a new personal career-high. One week later, on May 30, Thompson scored 27 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, including 4-of-4 from three-point range, in a win over Sacramento. The five-time WNBA All-Star just missed posting double-doubles on three occasions over her first five games – 20 points and nine rebounds vs. San Antonio on May 20, 35 points and eight rebounds at New York, and 17 points and eight rebounds at Connecticut on May 25.

Other candidates for WNBA Player of the Week were Charlotte's Tammy Sutton-Brown, Connecticut's Katie Douglas, Detroit's Cheryl Ford, Indiana's Tamika Catchings, New York's Elena Baranova, Phoenix's Diana Taurasi, San Antonio's Marie Ferdinand, and Washington's Chamique Holdsclaw.

The WNBA tipped off its much-anticipated eighth season last weekend with ABC's season-opening telecast featuring the Phoenix Mercury at the Connecticut Sun. The telecast was the highest rated WNBA game (regular season or playoffs) ever on ABC. WNBA.com also enjoyed a record-setting opening weekend with more than 2.5 million page views and 300,000 total visits to start the 2004 WNBA season.
