EDWARDSVILLE, ILLINOIS - Houston Dynamo 2 fell to St. Louis City 2 in the final match of a three-game road trip. This was just the second loss of the season for Dynamo 2.
Saint Louis opened the scoring in the 28th minute as defender Ezra Armstrong played a ball in for forward Vitor Dias, who got a shot past dynamo goalkeeper Xavier Valdez to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Saint Louis doubled its lead in the 55th minute as midfielder Célio Pompeu took a left-footed shot from the top of the box that found the back of the net.
Dynamo 2 got its first shot on goal in just the second minute of the game. Forward Papa N'Doye was fouled just outside of St. Louis' 18-yard-box and went on to take the resulting free kick, driving a low shot that was controlled by the opposing goalkeeper.
Houston continued to put pressure on the St. Louis goal, as defender Jathan Juarez fired in a cross to N'Doye, who added to his league-leading shot total in the 26th minute. His shot was blocked but fell to defender Reese Miller, making his first start of the season. Miller got a cross off to the head of midfielder Jacob Evans, whose shot was saved by the Saint Louis goalkeeper.
St. Louis nearly had its second goal of the match just before the end of the half, as Armstrong got out on a breakaway and got a shot off in the 45th minute, but Valdez made a wonderful save to keep the score 1-0. The Houston goalkeeper finished the night with five saves.
Houston defender Bryce Barnum came on in the 84th minute to make his MLS NEXT Pro debut.
Houston had its best chance of the match in the 88th minute as a Dynamo 2 free kick came to the head of defender Talen Maples, who put the ball on target but had his shot stopped by a diving save from the St. Louis goalkeeper.
Dynamo 2 are back in Houston next Saturday, when they will take on Sporting Kansas City II.
