Aiken Foxhounds News Release
AIKEN, S.C. - Kelly Hunt hit his league-leading 17th home run and drove in three runs as the Aiken Foxhounds (32-39, 11-16) were successful in their return home to Roberto Hernandez Stadium Thursday night, defeating the visiting Charlotte County Redfish (19-52, 7-18) 11-5. The Foxhounds, who had won just two of their previous nine games, ended a two-game losing streak with the win.
Facing Ricardo Gomez, one of the best starting pitchers in the league with a 2.51 ERA coming into , the Foxhounds used a patient approach at the plate. A single by Josh Eachues and two two-out walks loaded the bases for Aiken pitcher John Ducey, who ripped a 1-1 pitch into the right center field gap to clear the bases for a 3-0 lead.
Hunt increased the lead to 4-0 in the third with a solo home run to left center field.
The Redfish cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the fourth, but Aiken responded in a big way in the bottom of the frame. Three walks yielded by Gomez loaded the bases with two outs, and B.J. Richmond and Ben Bando followed with back-to-back two-run base hits as the Hounds increased their advantage to 8-3.
Gomez (3-3) left after the fourth inning, allowing eight runs, all earned, on five hits and six walks while striking out three.
Charlotte County scored two more runs in the sixth to chase Ducey from the contest, but the hosts' offense again responded, this time due in large part to two Redfish errors. Hunt made the defense pay for their miscues by ripping a two-run double to left.
Ducey (3-2) earned the win, allowing five runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings. The hurler walked four and struck out three.
Hunt finished the game 3-for-4 with two doubles, the home run, and three RBI to lead the Foxhounds' offensive attack. Bando and Richmond added two RBI apiece, and Andy Lane scored three times.
Josh Murray went 2-for-4 including a ninth-inning solo home run for the Redfish. Billy Hogan, Billy Kovatch, and P.J. Lehman each added two hits as Charlotte County out-hit Aiken 11-9.
Aiken and Charlotte County return to Hernandez Stadium to play game two of their three-game series on Friday night at 7:05 PM.
