Frisco RoughRiders News Release
Midland, TX-It was a seesaw battle that saw a series of ties and lead changes, but the RockHounds found a way to elude the RoughRiders, winning 6-5 Monday night at Citibank Ballpark. Midland's Shane Peterson had the game winning hit in the bottom of the ninth, an RBI single to left off "ËRiders reliever Joseph Ortiz (0-1).
The RockHounds scored first off Carlos Pimentel. Batting second, Josh Horton nailed his fifth home run of the year on a ball that barely stayed fair down the right field line. "ËRiders manager Steve Buechele came out to argue the call with first base umpire Alex Ortiz, but after conferencing with fellow umpires Nick Bailey and Justin Sassaman, Ortiz stuck with his call.
One inning later the RockHounds added to their lead, on a home run by Jeremy Barfield to deep left center. Like Horton's in the first, it was also a solo shot, and made it 2-0 Midland.
In the fourth, the RoughRiders picked up their first run, on an RBI base hit by Ryan Strausborger, but Midland regained its two-run lead after Barfield reached on a throwing error by Mike Olt and later scored. It was Olt's seventh error of the season, and second in as many games.
Meanwhile, a defensive miscue by the RockHounds helped the "ËRiders return it to a one-run game in the fifth. Guilder Rodriguez walked and scooted to second on a wild pitch by Sonny Gray. One batter later, Rodriguez stole third, and came home after the throw by "ËHounds catcher Ryan Ortiz sailed into leftfield.
Rodriguez would strike again in the sixth. Following a walk by Chris McGuiness and a double by Ryan Strausborger, the "ËRiders utility man spanked a single off the wall in right to score both runners, and give Frisco its first lead 4-3.
An RBI double by Dusty Coleman allowed the RockHounds to reclaim a temporary 5-4 advantage, but Chris McGuiness answered right back with a two-bagger in the top of the seventh, which scored Mike Olt.
Still tied going into the bottom of the ninth, Midland loaded the bases against Joseph Ortiz. Tyler Ladendorf and Michael Spina worked walks, while Michael Choice was given an intentional free pass. With no room for error, Shane Peterson came through in the clutch, lining an opposite field single to left, to bring home the winning run.
Joseph Ortiz was charged with his first loss of the season, allowing one run on three walks over 1.2 innings. Jonathan Ortiz (2-1) picks up the win for Midland, he pitched a scoreless ninth, and walked two.
Frisco and Midland play the second of four games Tuesday morning. Barret Loux (7-0, 2.37) tosses for the "ËRiders, he will be opposed by Hooks right-hander Shawn Havilland (1-3, 6.29). First pitch is slated for 11:00 am, and can be heard on KKGM 1630 AM or on ridersbaseball.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 10:30.
The RoughRiders return home on Friday, May 18, when the San Antonio Missions visit Dr Pepper Ballpark. To purchase tickets, fans can visit the box office or buy online at ridersbaseball.com.
