YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Youngstown SteelHounds of the Central Hockey League announced today that Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Kaminski has signed forward Erik Johnson for the 2007-08 season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Johnson, 26, will make his SteelHounds and CHL debut this season after spending his first two professional season in the ECHL where he compiled 14 goals and 12 assists in 63 games with San Diego, Cincinnati and Pensacola. Prior to turning pro the native of Coon Rapids, Minnesota played four years of Division I hockey at Mercyhurst College where he was a teammate of fellow SteelHound newcomer Denis Kirstein.
While enrolled at Mercyhurst Johnson proved to be a big offensive producer for the Lakers racking up 28 goals and 32 assists in 117 games.
Head Coach Kevin Kaminski was pleased about signing the 5-9, 170-pound forward saying, "He is a kid coming into his own. Erik was one of the fastest skaters in the ECHL last year and can bring the crowd to their feet with his speed." Kaminski went onto say, "I am expecting him to have a breakthrough year and as long as he plays with confidence, he should be able to provide that for us."
Johnson and Kirstein will step onto the ice for the first time on October 12th when the Hounds take on the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL in preseason play.
Youngstown SteelHounds 2007-2008 home opener will be November 23rd when the Hounds host the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. Call the Hounds ticket department at (330) 747-PUCK and do not forget to ask about how you can bring your group to a SteelHounds hockey game at the Chevrolet Centre.
