Grand Rapids Hoops News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. â The Grand Rapids HOOPS tipped off the 2002-03 season on Friday night with a 103-97 victory over the Idaho Stampede in front of 3,187 at the Idaho Center Arena. F Kei Madison and G Larry Ayuso led the scoring with 22 points each.
Grand Rapids (1-0) faces the Stampede again tonight in a scheduling quirk that leaves the team's facing off in the first three games of the season, including the HOOPS home opener on Wednesday, November 20.
Head Coach Rod Baker won his professional debut in a solid performance in which Grand Rapids led nearly the entire game, collecting five of the seven quarter points. The HOOPS got off to a fast start, taking a 53-44 half time lead behind hot shooting and a balanced scoring effort. Overall, Grand Rapids shot 56 percent (10-18) from behind the three-point arc. The team also finished with six players in double figures.
The game saw two other impressive CBA debuts as G Eric Murdock recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 assists, and F Chris Bacon came off the bench to contribute 13 points.
Idaho (0-1) was paced by G Brian Green, who registered 24 points, and F Sharif Fajardo, who chipped in 20.
