Grand Rapids Hoops News Release
Grand Rapids, MI - The Continental Basketball Association's Grand Rapids HOOPS announced today that Jerald Honeycutt and Alex Scales have signed one-year deals for the 2002-2003 season.
Honeycutt (6-9, 265) most recently played overseas in the Philippines League, ranking among the league leaders with 26.2 points (4th) and 6.5 assists (1st) per game. The power forward has one year of previous experience in the CBA, playing 36 games with the Idaho Stampede during the 1999-00 season, averaging 18.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.
The leading scorer in Tulane history, Honeycutt was originally drafted in the second round (39th overall) of the 1997 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. He went on to play 41 games in two seasons in Milwaukee, before being dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers in a four-player swap. In 53 career games in the NBA, he holds a 5.1 scoring average.
Scales (6-4, 190) returns to the states after spending two years overseas in the Chinese and Italian basketball leagues. An explosive leaper, Scales was a co-winner of the slam-dunk competition at the 2002 Chinese League All-Star game. A graduate of the University of Oregon, Scales was named first team All PAC-10 in 2000 after putting up 16.3 points and 4.3 rebounds during his senior year campaign.
Honeycutt and Scales will join the rest of the HOOPS squad for the 2002-03 Media Day, to be held October 31, at 3 p.m. at the DeltaPlex. The team's training camp opens this Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the Courthouse Athletic Center, the official practice facility of the HOOPS.
