Hoops Sign Number One Draft Pick

October 31, 2002 - Continental Basketball Association 2 (CBA 2)
Grand Rapids Hoops News Release

Grand Rapids, MI - The Continental Basketball Association's Grand Rapids HOOPS announced today that their number one pick in the 2002 CBA Draft, Kelly Wise, signed a one-year deal for the 2002-03 season. Forward Chris Bacon also agreed to a deal that will bring him to the opening of training camp this Friday.

Wise (6-10, 220) was selected fifth overall in this season's draft and will be looked upon to bring an inside presence to the HOOPS frontcourt. Last season, he was named to the Conference USA first team after leading the Memphis Tigers to the post-season NIT Tournament championship. The Florida native was the first player in conference history to compile 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in his career. As a senior, he averaged 12.0 points and 10.8 rebounds.

Bacon (6-9, 190) last played professionally with the Kentucky ProCats of the now defunct American Basketball Association (ABA). During the Cats' 2001-02 season, Bacon registered 14.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. He became a free agent this off-season when the ABA ceased operations. The lanky forward played his final collegiate season with Nicholls State where he earned Newcomer of the Year honors after transferring from Pearl River Junior College.

Wise and Bacon will join many other new faces on a revamped HOOPS roster. The team opens their 14th training camp as a member of the CBA this Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the Courthouse Athletic Center, the official practice facility of the HOOPS.
