Hoops' McElroy Named CBA Rookie of the Year

The Continental Basketball Association announced today that Grand Rapids HOOPS' guard Immanuel McElroy has been named Rookie of the Year for the 2002-03 season. McElroy also heads the five-man CBA All-Rookie squad.
McElroy (6-4/195) was instrumental in Grand Rapids' run to the final CBA playoff berth, as he averaged 15.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.7 assists after being inserted in the team's starting lineup following All-Star weekend. In Grand Rapids' 141-104 trouncing of Sioux falls in the regular season finale, the former Cincinnati Bearcat had one of his finest performances of the season recording 21 points (9-10 FG), six rebounds, six assists, and three steals as Grand Rapids edged past the Gary Steelheads and into the American Conference finals.
On the year, McElroy averaged 11.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.4 assists in 46 games, including 24 starts. A two-time Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year, McElroy was easily the team's best defender, while also displaying an efficient offensive repertoire. The lanky forward finished the season ranked fourth in the league in field goal shooting (212-358, .592) and shot an impressive 120-147 (.816) from the free throw line.
The Texas native is the first Grand Rapids player to receive the distinguished honor since Ray Jackson following the 1995-96 campaign. Overall, McElroy is the fourth HOOPS player to have been awarded the Rookie of the Year. McElroy also is the 15th member of the HOOPS to be named to the All-Rookie Team, Galen Young was the last in 1999-00.
McElroy is joined on the All-Rookie Team by Sioux Falls' Corsley Edwards, Dakota's Corey Bradford, Idaho's Byron Mouton, and Great Lakes' Cam Stephens.
The 2002-03 Rookie of the Year will hit the hard floor once again on Tuesday, March 18 at the DeltaPlex Arena in Game Three of the American Conference finals against the Rockford Lightning. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EST.
