Grand Rapids Hoops News Release
Grand Rapids, MI - The Continental Basketball Association's Grand Rapids HOOPS announced today that Immanuel McElroy has signed a one-year deal for the 2002-2003 season.
McElroy (6-4, 200) was drafted by the HOOPS in the fifth round (29th overall) of the 2002 CBA Draft. The shooting guard had spent the past two years with the University of Cincinnati after transferring from Tyler Junior College in 2000.
The former Bearcat, touted as a defensive stopper, was rewarded with the Conference USA's 2001-02 Defensive Player of the Year honors. He finished his career with an 8.2 scoring average and nearly a 2 to 1 assist to turnover ratio. While not considered to be an offensive force, McElroy will supply the HOOPS with an extra ball handler with good court vision.
Prior to joining Cincinnati, McElroy earned Second Team All-America recognition as a sophomore at Tyler Junior College.
In other CBA movement, the Great Lakes Storm signed former HOOPS forward, Willie Simms. Simms had been with the HOOPS since 1997 and is currently ranked among the team's all-time leaders in points (4th) and rebounds (3rd). Over his five-year stint with Grand Rapids, Simms averaged 14.7 points per game.
The HOOPS begin their 14th season in the CBA as their home schedule tips-off on Wednesday, November 20 at the DeltaPlex. For season or group ticket plans please call Rebecca at (616) 559-7939.
