Hoops Evade the Storm

The Grand Rapids HOOPS were able to solidify their hold on the final playoff spot in the American Conference by defeating the Great Lakes Storm 128-109 Monday night at the Birch Run Expo Center. Grand Rapids won six of seven quarter points on the night and currently lead the Gary Steelheads by 7.5 quarter points with eight games remaining.

Alex Scales recorded 23 points (10-16 FG) to lead the HOOPS, while Olden Polynice (11-16 FG) chipped in a season-high 23 points and 14 rebounds. Jerald Honeycutt (6-13 FG) led four other players in double figures with 18 points.

Grand Rapids (19-21) was able to snap out of their recent shooting slump in the victory by connecting on 46-86 (.535) field goal attempts. As a team, they also made 34-38 (.895) from the foul line, their best showing of the season.

Great Lakes (18-25) lost for the eighth time in ten games despite a rousing performance by Eastern Mchigan product DeSean Hadley. Overall, Hadley scored 30 points and hauled in a game-high 15 rebounds on the night. James Head also registered 26 points for the Storm, while Tyson Wheeler dished out 14 assists.

Grand Rapids will now head home to host the Storm on Wednesday night at the DeltaPlex Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EST.
