Grand Rapids Hoops News Release
The Grand Rapids HOOPS worked overtime for the second consecutive game and were able to edge out the Yakima Sun Kings 107-103 at the DeltaPlex Arena. Jerald Honeycutt and Alex Scales each registered 23 points to lead the HOOPS to 5.5 of seven quarter points.
After a tough one-point loss last night to the Rockford Lightning, Grand Rapids was able to score six straight points down the stretch to tie the game and force overtime. In the extra frame, Scales dropped in seven of the teams fifteen points, including two three-pointers to put the game out of reach.
Yakima (15-12), who made their first visit to Grand Rapids of the season, were led by Damien Cantrell's 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Tyson Wheeler dished out a league-high 23 assists.
Grand Rapids also received solid contributions from Tim Kisner, who dished out 13 assists, and Kevin Simmons, who hauled in 22 rebounds on the night.
Once again, Grand Rapids (11-14) struggled out of the starting gate, falling behind 33-19 after one quarter and 53-46 at the half. The HOOPS were able to connect on just 18-46 (.391) shots in the half, while the Sun Kings connected on 24-42 (.571).
The second half was a different story as Grand Rapids was able to overcome a Yakima lead that swelled as large as 15 points. The game marked the first time in 12 games that the HOOPS won after trailing at the half.
Both teams were short-handed on the night, with Grand Rapids missing Eric Murdock and Rashad Tucker, while Yakima's Nick Rivers and Darrick Martin also did not see any action.
