The Grand Rapids HOOPS were able to bounce back from defeat by beating the Great Lakes Storm 129-119 at the DeltaPlex Arena. The HOOPS earned 6 of 7 quarter points on the night, as they were able to topple their interstate foes for the third time in eight meetings.
Jerald Honeycutt and Alex Scales, who scored 28 and 24 points, respectively, led Grand Rapids to victory. They were also assisted by double-doubles recorded by Olden Polynice (14 points, 14 rebounds) and Kevin Simmons (14 points, 12 rebounds). Great Lakes was spearheaded by Corey Hightower's 29 points, while James Head added 28 points of his own.
Great Lakes (15-17) took the first quarter point, out scoring the HOOPS 28-25 behind 11 points by Head. However, the HOOPS responded by hitting on 14-14 free throws in the second quarter in taking a 60-58 halftime lead. For the game, Grand Rapids was 30-32 (.938) from the charity stripe.
Grand Rapids (14-17) was able to put some distance between the teams as Immanuel McElroy scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half. Syracuse-alum Lazarus Sims also was a major contributor in the third and fourth quarter, registering 12 of his 16 points.
The HOOPS next will host the Gary Steelheads on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at the DeltaPlex.
