Grand Rapids Hoops News Release

The Grand Rapids HOOPS topped the Rockford Lightning 123-119 in front of a season-high 2,537 fans at the DeltaPlex Arena on Friday afternoon. The HOOPS took five of seven quarter points in snapping their three-game slide.

Alex Scales led Grand Rapids with 31 points (12-26 FG), while Immanuel McElroy registered 28 points (13-17 FG) of his own. Jerald Honeycutt added 20 points and a season-high nine assists, while Kevin Simmons hauled in a game-high 17 boards.

Grand Rapids (18-20) jumped out to an early lead, shooting 50 percent (13-26) from the field in the first. Scales and McElroy each chipped in nine points to lead the HOOPS in taking the first quarter 33-26. It marked the first time in ten games that the HOOPS won the first frame.

The second quarter was more of the same, as Grand Rapids took a 62-50 lead into the locker room at the half. McElroy registered 19 points through two quarters, while Danny Johnson led Rockford with 16 points. The half was very well played with each team committing just six turnovers.

Rockford (26-13) made a game of it in the second half, winning the games' final two quarters. They were able to chip away at the Grand Rapids' advantage, which grew as large as 17 points in the third quarter. In fact, the Lightning briefly took the lead at 98-97 on a long jumper by Johnson.

The HOOPS were to tough down the stretch, however, as Honeycutt and Scales combined on 20 points in the final frame to seal the win for Grand Rapids.

Teddy Dupay, who recorded a triple-double with 17 points, 15 assists, and ten rebounds, led Rockford in defeat. The Lightning also received solid offensive contributions from Johnson, who finished up with 26 points, and Albert White, who put in 22 points on the night.

The same two teams will meet up again on Sunday night at the Rockford MetroCenter. Tip off is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. EST.
