The Grand Rapids HOOPS scored a franchise record 148 points as they trounced the Gary Steelheads by a score of 148-95 at the Genesis Convention Center. The victory is the HOOPS' sixth in seven games, and fourth in a row over the Steelheads. Four twenty-point scorers led Grand Rapids to all seven quarter points and their prolific scoring output since January 28, 1994 (La Crosse).
Larry Ayuso led the HOOPS with 33, while Jerald Honeycutt added 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Alex Scales also added a career-high 25 points, and Eric Murdock rounded out the quartet with 21 of his own.
Grand Rapids (6-5) jumped off to a hot start, grabbing a 32-14 lead midway through the first quarter after an Eric Murdock three-point make. The HOOPS held a 45-24 advantage at the break, following a 9-0 run to complete the quarter. Murdock (15), Ayuso (13) and Honeycutt (12) all were in double-figures, as the three combined on 14-18 FG shooting.
The trend continued in the second quarter as the HOOPS continued to build on their lead behind the strength of their bench. Scales led the way in the second with 14, as the bench compiled 23 of the teams 26 points. Gary did not help its' cause, committing 19 turnovers on its way to a 71-43 deficit at the half.
Gary (4-8) allowed the game to get out of hand in the third quarter as Grand Rapids roared to a 54-point advantage. Following an 8-0 run, their fourth of eight points or more in the game, the Steelheads found themselves down 92-46 with seven minutes remaining in the third. Ayuso scored 16 points in the quarter, hitting on 4-5 3FG. The team finished the game 15-27 from long distance.
Grand Rapids was able to rest their starters through much of the fourth quarter as they sailed to their fourth quarter win of the night. Tim Kisner took advantage of extended playing time, registering a career-high ten points, while newly-acquired Reggie Butler recorded ten boards. Chris Bacon also added 14 off the bench.
Grand Rapids now travels to face the Rockford Lightning this Friday at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The HOOPS return home to face the defending CBA champions Dakota Wizards on Wednesday at the DeltaPlex Arena.
