Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - David Martinez earned his minor-league leading 10th win in 11 decisions as Corpus Christi edged San Antonio 4-2 Wednesday night at Whataburger Field before 4,884.

The Hooks snapped a four-game losing streak while averting a series sweep.

Martinez blanked the Missions over the final 4 1/3 frames riding piggyback on his rotation partner, Mike Foltynewicz. Wednesday's short bridge was Kenny Long, who achieved the second out of the San Antonio fifth. Long then yielded a single to Rico Noel and struck Cory Spangenberg, prompting Hooks manager Keith Bodie to go to Martinez.

Domingo Santana's 14th home run - a two-run shot to left-center off Keyvius Sampson after George Springer reached on a two-out error - briefly provided the Hooks with an early advantage.

San Antonio quickly squared the contest. Johan Limonta stroked a lead-off double to right and an out later, Eddy Rodriguez launched a bomb of his own to left-center.

Foltynewicz realized his 75-pitch limit after 4 1/3. Houston's 2010 first-round draft selection logged eight strikeouts, five hits and a walk.

Sampson, who faced one over the minimum from the second through fifth, extricated himself from a bases-loaded dilemma in the sixth. He quelled the uprising by catching Jonathan Meyer with a called third strike on the outside black.

Sampson threw 94 pitches through six, permitting just three hits and two walks while striking out seven.

His relief, Matt Jackson (0-1) ran into game-defining two-out trouble during the seventh. Jackson retired the first two Hooks, but allowed an infield single to Enrique Hernandez before walking Jiovanni Mier. Rene Garcia's single up the middle scored Hernandez for the go-ahead run and a fielding error by Noel in center fielder enabled Mier to race home.

The Hooks next play four at Frisco Thursday through Monday. RoughRiders right-hander Neil Ramirez (8-2) meets Jake Buchanan (7-1) in the opener.
