Honu Overcome Deficit, Stun Sharks

October 28, 2007 - Hawaii Winter Baseball 2 (HWB 2)
North Shore Honu News Release

The North Shore Honu erased a five-run deficit thanks to a six-run outburst in the sixth frame to get by the Honolulu Sharks, 8-6, this afternoon at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park.

Sharks starter Shingo Matsuzaki pitched brilliantly, shutting the Honu out through five innings on two hits while striking out five, and now leads HWB with 37 punch-outs. But North Shore (18-7) stormed back in the sixth, touching Honolulu reliever Katsuyuki Aihara for six runs on five hits in 2/3 of an inning thanks in part to a pair of two-RBI singles off the bats of Chris Valaika and Billy Hart.

After the Sharks (12-12-1) tied the score at 6-6 in the home half of the inning, North Shore picked up a run in both the seventh and eighth innings on a Mat Gamel solo home run and Alexander Presley RBI single, respectively, to go ahead for good.

Charles Benoit picked up his league-leading fourth victory after allowing a run in two innings of relief. Takashi Kamoshida took the HWB lead with his third save of the season despite allowing two hits in the ninth inning. Interestingly, Benoit is also tied for second on the list of save leaders.

Argenis Diaz and Austin Jackson each went 3-4 on the afternoon with an RBI to lead the Honolulu offense. Diaz boosted his league-leading batting average to .444, while Jackson tripled twice and took sole possession of the league lead with four three-baggers on the year.

There are no games scheduled for tomorrow, but play resumes on Tuesday as the Sharks take on the Waikiki BeachBoys, and North Shore meets the West Oahu CaneFires.
