Honu Continue Domination of CaneFires

October 25, 2007 - Hawaii Winter Baseball 2 (HWB 2)
North Shore Honu News Release

North Shore won its fifth consecutive Hawaii Winter Baseball game with a 7-6 victory over West Oahu tonight at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park. The Honu (15-6) have now won all seven meetings with the CaneFires (6-14-1), and hold a comfortable 8 ½-game advantage over their HWB West Division counterparts.

West Oahu got out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a second-inning solo home run off the bat of Russell Mitchell.

But North Shore answered with the tying run in the top of the fourth inning, and pulled away thanks to four runs in the fifth, and two more in the seventh. Brad Corley hit a two-run home run, and four different Honu hitters picked up two base knocks on the evening.

The CaneFires rallied in the ninth, however, thanks to an RBI double from Ian Gac, followed by a two-run double to deep right-center field by K.C. Herren which narrowed the deficit to 7-4. West Oahu proceeded to load the bases with two out, and Honu reliever Omar Aguilar unleashed a wild pitch which allowed Herren to trot home and bring the home team within two runs of tying the score. Aguilar then tossed another wild pitch, allowing Brian Jeroloman to score from third, and the tying runner, Hidekazu Hoshi, moved over to third.

Kevin Roberts was summoned by North Shore skipper Kevin Bradshaw to save the game for the Honu, and Roberts did just that, retiring Ryan Rogowski to end the game.

Shinya Nakayama (3-1, 4.26 ERA) earned the victory after going six innings and striking out nine while allowing one run on one hit. Marco Gonzales fell to 0-1 and saw his ERA balloon to 21.60, allowing four runs without retiring a batter.

The two teams return to Hans L'Orange Park tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. for the series finale.
