Grand Rapids Hoops News Release
The Grand Rapids Hoops snapped a three-game losing streak in defeating the Yakima Sun Kings 133-123 in an overtime thriller Saturday night at the Yakima Valley Sun Dome. Jerald Honeycutt helped to secure the victory for Grand Rapids, scoring 11 points in the extra frame, including all three of his three-point attempts.
A basket by Yakima's Ike Harmon with 18 seconds remaining forced the game into overtime, but Grand Rapids was able to connect on 7-9 field goal attempts as they outscored the short-handed Sun Kings 18-8.
Alex Scales scored a game-high 34 points (13-20) to lead Grand Rapids, while Immanuel McElroy added 27 points (12-18 FG). With his late heroics, Honeycutt finished with 21 point (9-18 FG) and Kevin Simmons added 15 points (4-10 FG) and ten rebounds for the Hoops. On the night, Grand Rapids was able to snap out of a mini-shooting slump by hitting on 52-96 (542) field goal attempts, including 13 three pointers.
Grand Rapids (21-24) secured five quarter points in the victory and currently lead the Gary Steelheads by two points with three games remaining for the final American Conference playoff berth.
For two quarters, it seemed as if the Hoops would easily defeat the Sun Kings as they were able to build a 14-point lead behind 17 first half points by Scales. However, despite being without three of their leading scorers, Yakima refused to lay down.
Yakima (28-16) was led by four players that accounted for all but 12 points on the night. Anthony Miller led the way with 30 points (14-30 FG) and 21 rebounds, while Harmon added 30 points (14-25 FG) and 18 rebounds. Mitchell Butler and Adrian Peterson also chipped in 27 points (11-21 FG) and 26 points (9-23 FG), respectively. The Sun Kings held a 64-46 rebounding advantage in the game.
The same two teams will meet for the third consecutive game on Wednesday night at the DeltaPlex Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EST.
