Grand Rapids Hoops News Release
Jerald Honeycutt scored 16 of his game-high 31 points in the fourth quarter as the Grand Rapids HOOPS toppled the Great Lakes Storm 120-116 at the Birch Run Expo Center. Grand Rapids had to hold off a fourth quarter run by Great Lakes in order to take five of seven quarter points and hold on to their second place spot in the American Conference.
Grand Rapids (13-16) was aided to victory by Alex Scales' 24 points and Kevin Simmons' 22 points and eight rebounds. Jermaine Jackson had yet another solid all-around effort for the Storm, scoring 30 points and dishing out a game-high 11 assists.
The HOOPS held a 40-33 lead heading into the locker room as they registered 18 assists on 22 first half baskets. Recent injuries and departures have forced Grand Rapids to rely heavily on ball movement and fast break offense to order to be successful. For the game, the HOOPS had 30 assists, while their fast break was spurred on by 12 first half turnovers for Great Lakes.
Facing a 85-73 deficit through three quarters, Great Lakes (14-15) came out running in the final frame. Newly-acquired Tyson Wheeler and All-Star James Head sparked the rally for the Storm. Head finished the game with 27 points, while Wheeler scored eight of his ten points during the Storm's fourth quarter run. Solid free-throw shooting down the stretch helped Grand Rapids hold on for the victory. They were 33-41 (.805) from the charity stripe on the night.
The same two teams face off again on Friday night at the DeltaPlex Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
