Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA - The Washington Wild Things (29-29), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, beat the Midwest Sliders (26-30) 6-4 Sunday night at CONSOL Energy Park. By doing so, the team erased the slow start it had in May and June by reaching the .500 mark for the first time since the second game of the season.
The Wild Things continued swinging a hot bat, as the team used the homerun ball to break even for the season. In fact, every run for the team came via homeruns as the team hit four in the game. First baseman Ernie Banks led the way, hitting two, giving him 15 for the season. Outfielders Matt Sutton (8) and Chris Sidick (5) each hit one a piece.
After walking the first batter of the game and allowing him to come around to score, Banks answered in the bottom of the inning with his first homerun of the night, a three-run shot. Sliders' shortstop Bryan Bonner would tie the game at three in the fourth with a two-run single. It would not last.
Sutton put the Wild Things back up for good a half inning later with his homerun, before Sidick and Banks added two more in the fifth. Second baseman Michael Parker also extended his hitting streak to 21 games on the first pitch he saw in the game. Parker went 2-4 on the night.
Starter Brian McCullough (4-2) earned his fourth win, holding the Sliders to three runs on three hits in six innings pitched.
Sliders' starter Kyle Wink took the loss. Wink drops to 1-1 for the season, as the Wild Things got to him early, pitching four and two thirds and surrendering all six runs on seven hits. Relievers Michael Lucas and Justin Edwards each pitched a scoreless inning. Keith Meyer earned his first save of the season.
The Wild Things will look to post a winning record for the first time this season when the two teams meet again Monday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with airtime set to begin at 6:55 on 95.3 FM WJPA.
