Sacramento Capitals News Release
The Sacramento Capitals' Nicole Vaidisova was invited to play with six of the world's Top 10 women at the 2005 Watsons Water Champion Challenge in Victoria Park, Hong Kong, on January 5-8.
Unfortunately, she was unable to display her full talents that week. "Nicole pulled out prior to her first match because of food poisoning," relayed her agent, Olivier Van Lindonk. "She played in only one doubles exhibition."
The star-studded lineup also included 2004 Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova; world No. 2 Amelie Mauresmo; Grand Slam champions Venus and Serena Williams; 2004 French Open champion Elena Likhovtseva; and 2004 U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova. Former world No. 1 in singles and doubles, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, participated only in doubles.
Vaidisova, a 15-year-old phenom from the Czech Republic, was invited to the exhibition because she captured two WTA Tour titles in 2004 and is rapidly climbing the ranks. Vaidisova also dominated Sharapova in a World TeamTennis match in July 2004.
Tournament organizers decided on a round-robin format so that fans could look forward to watching several high quality matches.
