Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill.- Rockford set out to do two things tonight, win and gain ground, and they accomplished both. The IceHogs topped the Bloomington PrairieThunder 3-2 in front of 4,239 fans at the Rockford MetroCentre on Friday night. It gave Rockford a much needed two points in the standings, but more importantly it also allowed them to gain a point in the Conference standings on the Fort Wayne Komets, who lost in a shootout to the Quad City Mallards.
IceHogs goalie Jake Moreland took a puck to his right shoulder in warm-ups and their was some question as to whether he would start or not. Despite the tender shoulder, Moreland played a nice game in goal, saving 19-of-21 shots. In what was a quite game penalty wise, the IceHogs went 1-for-3 on the power play and Bloomington went 0-2 on the man advantage. It was a low shooting total night, as well, as Rockford only shot 23 shots and Bloomington took 21. Neither of the two teams registered a double digit shot total in any period (Rockford 6, 8, and 7/Bloomington took 6, 9, and 8)
Rockford forward Jason Notermann tallied the only goal of the first period when he redirected a shot from defenseman Nathan Lutz. In the second frame things opened up a bit for both teams. Bloomington defenseman Jarad Bourasa scored on a 2-on-1 one to beat Moreland at 5:23. The Thunder then took a 2-1 lead when forward Alex Goupil intercepted a Rockford pass and lit the lamp on a breakaway. Rockford winger Jason Ralph evened things up and returned the favor as he snatched a Thunder pass and beat Bloomington goalie Kris Tebbs over the shoulder with a lethal snapshot.
The IceHogs tallied the game-winning goal at 5:53 in the third period when Notermann notched his second goal of the affair. Rockford winger Bruce Watson kicked the puck to Notermann off a rebound and he promptly launched the puck into the open net. Tonight's tilt was the final time these two clubs will meet at the MetroCentre this season.
