Toledo, OH - He is just one point shy of 100 career points with his hometown team and forward Alden Hirschfeld has agreed to terms with the Toledo Walleye for the 2016-17 season. Hirschfeld makes his comeback to Toledo following brain surgery this past March after suffering a seizure while playing for Toledo affiliate Grand Rapids (AHL) on January 8, 2016. In 27 games played last year for the Walleye, the Sylvania, Ohio native posted 14 goals and 12 assists. This will be the fourth year that he has worn a Walleye uniform appearing in 135 games (ranks 5th on Walleye All-Time list) while accruing 34 goals, 65 assists (4th), 99 points (4th) and 48 penalty minutes. "Alden is the ultimate competitor and leader," Head Coach Dan Watson said. "Going through what he has and fighting to return to the ice as he has done says everything about him. Both on and off the ice, he is a winner through and through." On February 22, 2015, Hirschfeld posted single game Toledo Walleye records with five assists, six points and a plus seven as the Walleye defeated Gwinnett 12-0. Over his career, Hirschfeld has 107 points (38G, 69A) in the ECHL starting in 2012-13 with South Carolina, and has also seen time in over 68 career contests between Grand Rapids, Providence and Portland in the AHL while scoring six goals with seven assists. Prior to turning professional, the 28-year-old appeared in 134 games over four seasons with the Miami of Ohio RedHawks. In those contests, Hirschfeld scored 35 goals while assisting on 35 others. He was a member of the 2011 CCHA Championship team and was Team Captain in the 2011-12 season. The 6'1", 205-pound forward skated for three years at Sylvania Northview High School prior to his college career with his last year there being the 2005-06 season, a season in which the Wildcats reached the State Title game. He was named Mr. Hockey Ohio in 2006, an award that is given to the best player in Ohio High School Hockey. The Toledo Walleye open training camp today at the Huntington Center. The home-opener for the Toledo Walleye is October 22 against the Brampton Beasts.
